This web page has been established by Jesuit Social Services and Catholic Social Services Australia to facilitate the distribution of information and statistical data related to the recently released report: Dropping Off the Edge. That report, under the authorship of Professor Tony Vinson, is a major new report which maps the distribution of social disadvantage throughout Australia. Each State and Territory has provided us with detailed information on more twenty different variables that are relevant to the measurement of social disadvantage. This information has been combined with data more readily available from the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Copies of the report are available through the order form on these web page, and detailed interactive maps and statistical data will soon be available online. The data contained on this web page will be helpful only with the contents of the publication Dropping Off The Edge before you.

More help for the homeless
02/03/2006 The Minister for Community Services, John Cobb, today announced funding of over $3.2 million under the National Homelessness Strategy (NHS) to trial and develop projects to prevent and reduce homelessness. Mr Cobb said eight organisations from across Australia would be funded in the first round of the NHS Demonstration Projects, helping people from a wide range of backgrounds including children and youth, families, people with mental illness, people leaving prisons and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. "In the 2005-06 Budget, the Howard/Vaile Government announced a further $10 million over four years in funding for the NHS to help people who are vulnerable to homelessness," Mr Cobb said.

A New Social Policy For The New Economy
Sustaining prosperity: new reform opportunities for Australia 31 March 2005 On 31 March 2005, Brotherhood of St Laurence Executive Director, Tony Nicholson, delivered a speech at the opening plenary session of the Economic and Social Outlook conference asking Australia’s political leaders to include all Australians in the growing economy. Tony’s speech addressed the questions ‘How prosperous have we become?’ and ‘What about the homeless and marginalised?’ and suggested a focus on reducing social exclusion to help people share and contribute to Australia’s prosperity. “Rather than give people passive welfare or churn them through bouts of short-term poverty by reducing wages and carrying a big stick, we should give them the skills to become active members of the new economy, producing even more wealth for all of us to enjoy.” The conference, Sustaining prosperity: new reform opportunities for Australia, held on Thursday 31 March and Friday 1 April at the University of Melbourne, included a long list of esteemed speakers including Peter Costello, Kim Beazley, John Brumby and Jenny Macklin.
